Originarios de Teignmouth, un pueblo al sur de Devon, Muse está formado por Matthew Bellamy (guitarra, piano y voz), Chris Wolstenholme (bajo) y Dominic Howard (percusión). Los tres se conocieron en una escuela de esa localidad y decidieron formar su primera banda llamada Gothic Plague, con tan solo 13 años de edad y que no resultó tener mucho éxito, ni tampoco las predecesoras: Fixed Penalty y Rocket Baby Dolls. Más tarde cambiaron el nombre por Muse y se lanzaron a los escenarios, tocando en los locales que podían. En 1998 las cosas empezaron a ir mejor. Taste Media se fijó en ellos y a partir de ahí, tras varias actuaciones en sitios más importantes el nombre de Muse se disputaba en cuatro compañías discográficas, entre ellas Mushroom y Maverick.

Sus primeros dos EP's llamados 'Muse' y 'Muscle Museum' fueron suficientes para que el productor de Radiohead, decidiera producir su primer LP. John Leckie, que estaba maravillado con Muse comenzó a trabajar en el proyecto. Su primer single fué 'Uno' y el siguiente 'Cave' los cuales darian paso a lo que sería su primer disco. 'Showbiz' salió a la venta el 4 de octubre de 1999. Este disco tuvo una gran aceptación y se calificó como una de las grandes sorpresas del año.

Fue en el Doctor Music Festival del 2000 donde Muse actuó por primera vez en España. También Muse actuó en festivales tan importantes como Glastonbury y el Reading Festival en Uk. Más tarde, Muse sacó varios singles como 'Sunburn' y 'Unintended' y se empezaron a preparar para su segundo álbum. Antes de esto, Muse dieron una gira por Estados Unidos y Japón.
